Under the motto "Innovation meets cultural heritage", the orchestra of the Collegium Musicum of the RWTH has had a string quartet made of carbon instruments at its disposal since May 2018. Since 2020, the carbon double bass has complemented the ensemble to form a carbon quintet. In this unique way, a link is created between innovative research and musical culture in Aachen.

The instruments are played by dedicated musicians from the orchestra. The ensemble can perform in alternating line-ups between string quartet and string quintet. In the future, the performances with the carbon double bass, which can be dismantled at the neck, will be a special highlight that should not be missed.

Since 2018, the carbon quintet has already performed at renowned events of the RWTH, the city of Aachen, at private celebrations (birthday, anniversary, wedding) as well as external collaborations in Hamburg and Berlin. With special attention to the textile origin of the instruments, the Carboncello was selected for the image film of the Techtextil and Texprocess trade fairs in Frankfurt am Main. A YouTube video can be viewed via the following weblink.

These carbon instruments were developed by mezzo forte Streichinstrumente, Werther, partly in cooperation with the Institute for Textile Technology at RWTH Aachen University.

This new RWTH carbon quintet is sponsored by Dr.-Ing. Dr. Ing h.c. (RWTH) Thomas Muhr (Muhr und Bender KG, Attendorn), Dr. Kleinalstede (mezzo-forte string instruments, Werther) as well as proRWTH and Professor h.c. (MGU) Dr.-Ing. Dipl.-Wirt. Ing. Thomas Gries (ITA Institute for Textile Technology at RWTH Aachen University).

- gladly stating your musical wishes and the planned duration of the performance. Depending on the instrumentation (quartet or quintet), the current repertoire includes works from baroque to late romantic, salon music as well as modern compositions. We are happy to search for suitable arrangements for your musical style on request.
